BONUS POINT #2 -Japan has created a Bonus Point Redemption Scheme that is different from the common world’s one? Is this unique scheme able to stimulate Japan’s internal consumption?

When you come to Japan, you may be surprised that Japan always has a variety of choices in different products, and the same business logic can apply to their bonus point redemption scheme as well because there really are a lot of different types of schemes for choices. Besides, their bonus point redemption scheme has slightly difference from others, I should say it is more aggressive than others. It is because, usually, we are able to redeem bonus points from the same service group only, however, Japan is not just like this, they allow customers to have more choices.

Why?

Most of the time, the bonus points obtained from one online market in Japan may be allowed to switch to another market platform. In other words, it allows customers to ‘combine’ the bonus points from different online market platforms into one they prefer.  For example, you have 1000 bonus points gained from A market platforms and 9000 bonus points from B, then you can shift the bonus points from A to B and that finally becomes 10000 bonus points for you to use.

In addition, they are not limited customer to gain bonus points by just one online market platform which they call it ‘EC site’ (Electronic Commerce サイド). Customers can gain from other retailers if that is within the same group of the scheme list.

T-point is a typical example.  T-point frequently has a lot of crossover promotions with other commercial products, for example of credit cards. It is easy to obtain the bonus points because it has a large group of affiliates, it gives a variety of choices to customers as well.

Let me show you two more examples of famous bonus point redemption schemes in Japan.  When you understand that concept, you will also understand others because they all applied with the same idea.

Rakuten Market (楽天市場)

The bonus points you obtained from Rakuten Market will be able to be spent on Rakuten’s affiliate partners’ services.  If you want to try, login in your account profile and go check the affiliate partner lists (使えるお店), a variety of shops in different categories will be listed.

There is a web page of Rakuten point (楽天ポイント)you can go for reference.

Isn’t Rakuten market platform offers considerable bonus points?

Rakuten has created many different bonus points promotion campaigns to stimulate their potential consumers for continuous consumption by using their schemes.  Rakuten Credit Card is an aggressive one.  I joined the card promotion in 2020 and have got 7000 + 23500 extra bonus points (1 point to 1 yen) after fulfilling the term of use in 1 year.

PayPay

In 2018, a newly launched electronic payment method – PayPay, created a campaign for new joiners.  For potential customers who first downloaded and registered their application service, 500 yen e-pocket money will be offered to the user account.

I remember I was in Kobe airport last winter, I downloaded and registered a new account and I got the money right that way.  I also spent that little money in a convenience store immediately for a cup of coffee with snacks. How grateful I was!

Besides, PayPay has frequent updates on their promotions via newsletter.  Last time, I got an online 50% discount coupon and I bought aroma fruit lipsticks on the joined market platform the next day.  After the purchase, I also obtained extra T-bonus points from the manufacturer and bonus points from PayPay.

Generally speaking, a lot of EC sites are available for choices, for instance of Hot Pepper, Gurunavi and Taberogu, they have a big group support and they are very popular in Japan.

Besides of the above EC sites, some media might also want to use the idea of bonus points redemption scheme to stimulate potential readers to regularly read their newsletters. Although not many bonus can be obtained for each time reading, however, 1000+ bonus points were received so far just registered for a few months and what I have done was clicked and read some interesting articles, just that simple!

In addition, different redemption schemes have different criteria to fulfil.  Before your action, better have a look into details and see if you are willing to fulfil the criteria.  Besides, not all of them offer 1 point to 1 yen cash redemption, you have to pay attention to it before your application.
